CDN/NDG was well prepared for moving chaos

By P.A. Sévigny The Suburban As usual, July's holiday weekend is often reduced to a logistical nightmare as Montreal's moving day madness takes over the city's normally quiet residential streets. While some tenants are moving out of their old apartments, others are moving in and a lot of snap decisions are made about mattresses and dressers. Within hours after the trucks are gone, everybody's knocking back a beer while waiting for some pizza, but the streets are still piled high with tons of decrepit and broken furniture which means the borough has to pick up the mess. While some of the city's boroughs admit they were overwhelmed by the tsunami of moving day detritus, experience has taught CDN/NDG borough managers how their failure to plan almost always guarantees their plan to fail. "We paid a lot of people overtime," said borough spokesman Francois Puchin. "Over the moving day period, we had four extra trucks on the road picking up large objects wherever our workers can find them." With over 160,000 people living within 20 square kilometres, the borough's trucks are bound to be busy because of a highly

mobile population which includes a lot of students who live in different parts of the borough. To their credit, a quick bike ride through NDG indicates the borough's blue collar workers seem to be doing a good job but it's easy to see they're getting some, if not a lot of help from the borough's ubiquitous scrap trucks. "It's my busy season," said Tony Arcadi as both he and his helper tossed an old washing machine onto the back of his pick-up truck. "There's nothing like a sore back and the thought of humping this up two flights of stairs to convince people to leave a monster like this on the street." Depending upon what he can find, Tony said he could make up to $100 a ton hauling metal to the city's various scrap yards. But even then, he's worried about the economy because "...steel is the economy's canary in the coal mine." When asked to explain, he said he was being paid only a fraction of what he used to get for steel which indicates a massive economic slowdown for economies all around the world. While Arcadi may be right, the city's Eco- Centres were also busy because long weekend line-ups at the gate prove how more than a few people decided to bring their own garbage to the dump instead of leaving it by the side of the road for someone else to deal with it. n
