Grier Park gets new
synthetic pitch
By Kevin Woodhouse
The Suburban
The borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro is
making improvements to Grier Park by
changing one of the natural grass soccer
fields to synthetic turf in order to expand
the sport?s season. Last Thursday morning,
borough mayor Monique Worth was joined
by Nelligan MNA and Quebec Minister of
Immigration and Cultural Communities
Yolande James at the park for a press conference
announcing the park?s renovation.
?We have nice weather today for some
nice news,? Worth told the assembled that
included councillors Bertrand Ward and
Christian Dubois, Pierrefonds-Dollard MNA
Bernard Patry and Fern De Silva, president
of the Pierrefonds Soccer Association.
?We have worked the last two years on the
modernization of the park. Soccer is a
growing sport in the borough with men,
women and children alike gaining the benefits
of healthy, physical exercise.?
The total cost of the project, which is slated
to be ready for the 2010 soccer season, is
$1,350,071 with $643,838 coming from
both the federal and provincial governments
combined.
The money has come from the
Programme de Soutien aux Installations
Sportives et Récréatives of the Government
of Quebec?s Fonds pour le Développement
du Sport et de l?Activité Physique and
through the Recreational Infrastructure
Canada Program.
?The existing surface has been overused
and is now completely ruined. The new
field, with its synthetic surface, will be more
durable and offer better playing conditions
over a longer period of the year. It will also
be possible to use it for the practice of other
sports such as football, rugby and flag-football,?
said James.
?Grier Park is a great part of our community
and we have great cooperation with our
provincial and federal governments,? said
Worth. She made a special mention to
Ward, applauding his persistence in bringing
the project to fruition. ?He left a lot of

messages and while it was never harassment,
it was close,? Worth quipped. ?But to
get anything done you have to be persistent.?
James added, ?Mr. Ward, please feel free
to leave me as many phone messages as
necessary,? which garnered another laugh.
Both Ward and James insisted that the
timing of the announcement in the early
days of the municipal campaign was not on
purpose but rather after two years of working
behind the scenes, the project was ready
to be brought to the forefront.
Prior to a symbolic turning of the soil,
Worth said ?this is your field and next will
be the construction of a chalet that will be
ready by the spring.?
De Silva was pleased with the news
because with almost 3,000 members, ?this
will extend the season of one field which will
help because right now, we cannot handle
any more requests. I have had to tell six senior
teams that right now, there is no space
for them.
?After two years, it is hard to believe that
it?s ready but we have reached a milestone
here as that is a facility we need, and one the
club deserves,? said De Silva. n
