Last week, SPVM Constable Marie-Josée
Déziel had the kind of day which reminds
every cop why they decided to join the
police.
?The three of us were due in court when
this guy flagged us down at the corner of
Decarie and Côte St. Luc Road,? said Déziel.
?After we pulled over and went to see what
was wrong, we could see this woman groaning
with pain in the front seat of his car and
she was holding onto her stomach. She was
in extreme pain and when she said ?It?s coming,
it?s coming?, I knew I wasn?t going to
make that court date.?
After the police called 911 for an ambulance,
Constable Déziel had the woman lie
down in the back of her husband?s taxi and
took her trousers off just as another cramp
began to bear down on the baby. As

Constable Robert Tessier began to re-direct
traffic, Constable Patrick Church maintained
cell phone contact with Christian
Legendre, the dispatcher at Urgences Santé
who began to coach Déziel as the baby
began to make her way into the world.
?It all happened very quickly,? said Déziel.
?I could see the membrane began to swell
and when it burst, her water gushed out and
suddenly the baby was there. I barely had
the time to catch her but it was still a tense
moment because I still didn?t know what to
do. After Legendre [the dispatcher] told me
to keep the baby warm, he told me to clean
the baby?s face, stick my finger in its mouth
to clean out any obstruction and to start the
baby?s breathing as soon as possible. I still
remember how happy I was when the baby
began to cry and I knew everything was
going to be alright.?

Welcome to ?The South-West

For many years now, our stories
