THE SUBURBAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2009 By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Shield of Athena Family Services held its annual membership drive at the downtown Baton Rouge Restaurant on Mountain Street a week ago Wednesday, attracting a standing room-only crowd of 250 and the praise of local TV personality Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau. The event, which also included performances by comedians from the Comedy Nest, raised nearly $15,000. Shield of Athena was founded in 1991 and serves 15 cultural and linguistic communities, helping victims of domestic abuse and raising awareness of the issue. Last week?s event was MCed by radio personality Eramelinda Boquer and hosted by Baton Rouge owner Chris Ann Nakis, a past president of Shield of Athena. Grégoire-Trudeau, best known in English Montreal circles for her work with CTV?s etalk and generally for being the wife of MP Justin Trudeau and now the mother of two, was the keynote speaker at the gathering. She was introduced by Shield of Athena executive director Melpa Kamateros. 16C9 $

?When Sophie came into our office in between nursings of her babies,? said Kamateros, ?she totally captivated us with her authenticity.? Grégoire-Trudeau said she was moved by the number of men in attendance at the event, supporting the fight against domestic violence. ?Think about it ? one woman in three in her lifetime on this planet will face violence,? she said. ?That is unexplainable and unacceptable. ?The women who find themselves in abusive relationships are frozen by anxiety and fear, and when you are frozen, you cannot act, you cannot detach yourself from your reality, and you cannot develop the good judgment to be able to stand, take a step back and say ?this is enough. ?This is why Shield of Athena makes all the difference, because what they?re doing is permitting women to detach themselves from their reality, to breathe and take control of their lives.
