St. Leonard?s Dupuis a diamond dog for baseball

By Mark Lidbetter The Suburban It all started harmlessly when St. Leonard native Gabriel Dupuis was in the third grade and an information sheet sent around the classes invited the students to sign on for baseball. ?I brought it (the bulletin) home and asked my dad if I could try,? the now 13-year-old Dupuis said, ?He said ?sure?, and I was hooked from my first practice.? Hooked was right, as Dupuis, while only 13, is a member of the elite Montreal Titans program where he guards the first base territory for the U16 Titans. ?Gabriel is a very mature and focused young man,? Titans coach Ian Jordan said. ?He is not out of place and has improved his strength this season.? Enroute to the Titans, Dupuis learned his basics in the St. Leonard Minor Baseball program until last season. ?I had a friend who was in the Titans program so I tried for the U12 team and made it last year,? Dupuis said. ?I enjoyed the challenge at that level; it helped me to improve my game.? Dupuis is also in the sports stream program at Lester B. Pearson school where his instructor is Ian Jordan. ?Gabriel fit in really well with the group,? Jordan said. ?Even though he was a grade seven and in a very strong group of athletes, he was up to the challenges.? Dupuis took full advantage of the sport stream program, where classes end at noon and following lunch the students can do their homework and utilize teachers for tutoring. Then it was onto training. This summer Dupuis is also volunteering in the St. Leonard multi-sports program where he gets to be a baseball mentor to younger St. Leonard kids while working alongside former Titan and current College of Saint Rose (Albany, New York) Golden Knight Michael Carbone. ?It?s a lot of fun teaching the players and I get to learn from Michael too,? he said. One thing is certain, Dupuis is a solid first sacker when it comes to fielding and is a line drive hitter who can deliver base runners for runs batted in. His skills and desire to improve have given him a long term goal. ?I want to go all the way (to pro ball),? he said. ?That is my dream and I will work hard to get there.? n 820 - ROOFING A-1 DELCO.
