New intervention program launched
Mack Belson Foundation teams with Bronfman Jewish Education Centre
The Mack Belson Early Academic Intervention Program has been officially launched. Developed by The Bronfman Jewish Education Centre (BJEC), the program evaluates, identifies and supports young children attending Jewish day schools. The primary goal of the assessment is to assure that these children are developing their foundational academic skills. Research has consistently shown that early assessment and intervention is one of the most powerful antidotes for students who are ?at risk? for learning challenges. Formally introduced in 2002, it has reached more than 2,500 students. In October 2008, as a result of partnering with The Mack Belson Foundation ? created by Gail Mendelman and David Belson in loving memory of their son, Mackenzie Reed Belson, a loving four-year-old boy who died tragically in a 2006 drowning accident ? and dedicated to fostering the full potential of children with learning disabilities, challenges and developmental delays, the pro- gram was renamed The Mack Belson Early Academic Intervention Program. Comprised of three phases, the first phase runs from September through January. Approximately 500 kindergarten students attending 14 Jewish day schools are assessed. Areas of development include number concepts, speech development, social interaction, early reading skills, language and literacy, text comprehension and writing conventions. Meetings with the teachers and the administration to review overall class and individual profiles are then scheduled. Phase two is the most important phase. From the end of January through mid-April, the Early Intervention consultants work with teachers and provide them with strategies to provide students with a solid foundation as they begin their formal learning journey. Finally, from mid-April through early June, the students identified as being ?at risk? are reassessed. Meetings are scheduled with teachers and administration to dis- cuss performance results. Meetings are also scheduled for the following academic year to discuss performance results with Grade 1 teachers. In the summer of 2008, Camp Reading Railroad was introduced. This is an intensive summer reading program with the main goal of targeting students? acquisition of reading skills. According to Dr. Karen Gazith, Director of Educational Services at BJEC, ?early intervention and prevention supports all students, especially those most ?at risk? as they embark on their path towards a successful academic experience.? Gail Mendelman is honoured to be a part of the program. ?As parents of a child who had a learning disability and who was assessed at a very young age, we understand how important early intervention is. My husband David and I are extremely grateful to BJEC for approaching us, asking us to be a part of this program and offering to rename it after Mack. So many children will be helped as a result. We can only hope that somewhere, Mackie is smiling his beautiful smile and that he is proud of us.?
