Ashton returns with new kids and same winning attitude
By David Goldberg The Suburban When his Senior Lynx team lost in the semi-finals of the 2008 Nationals in Oakville, Ont. last August, head coach Carey Ashton thought his minor baseball coaching career was over. The kids and parents of NDG Baseball, however, had other ideas. ?I thought I was done,? said Ashton, who had finished his 12th year with the organization. ?I was thinking that I wasn?t going to come back because these kids are more than just my ballplayers, they?re my family.? Ashton?s baseball ?family? had been with him for six years at the competitive Lynx level. In that time, they had been to four national championships and helped to put NDG Baseball on the map. Emotionally spent after the season, Ashton thought about retiring, that is until his phone kept ringing. ?I had offers not only from teams in NDG Baseball, but from other organizations,? he said. ?But I chose to coach the Junior Lynx this year. Most of the kids played with the Major team last year, and we had invited them to one of our practices. I liked the kids and the parents, and I wanted to coach at a level where it was real baseball rules, with leading.? This will be a year of adjustments, not only for Ashton and his staff, but also his first-year players. ?In Major, they play with 60-foot baselines and pitch from 46 feet. In Junior, they jump up to Major League dimensions, which means 90-foot baselines and they pitch from 60 feet, six inches, so there is a lot of work to do,? he said. But Ashton said he has plenty to work with, and named a few of the players he expects to perform well. SB D E S I G N ?We have one returning player in Oliver Singson. He had a chance to move up with his teammates from last year to the Senior level, but he chose to stay with us, and that means a lot to me,? said Ashton. ?Alexandre Lagios is a new player who is quiet, and has good size and a good work ethic. Victor Brunton is a good athlete with a great work ethic. Laurent Dupuis-Solliec works hard and throws the ball well, and Liam Wyatt has a lot of potential, like a lot the young kids coming up.? Singson said he?s looking forward to helping those young kids. ?I?d like to show the younger players how much different Major is from Junior. My arm wasn?t as strong as some of the other players when I first came up to Junior, but after a few weeks I got used to the distance,? he said. ?I want to try to lead the team, and be someone the young guys can look up to.? As for why he decided to say in Junior, Singson explained, ?Because I knew Carey was coaching and this would be a good opportunity to improve my skills and learn a lot of things, like being more responsible.? Ashton will have a link to one of his former players. His shortstop of the last four years, Jack Melkerson will be part of his coaching staff. ?That?s a real bonus to have him on our staff because he?s a kid who meant so much to me. Now to have him coach with me is really special,? he said. Asked what his goals are for the 2009 season, Ashton replied, ?My goal is the same goal I have every year. I?d like to win the provincial championship and represent our league with pride at the nationals.? Based on his track record, no one is betting against him. n
