Parshas Lech Lecha

As we begin these next series of Parshios we learn about the lives of our Avos and Imahos. Chazal say that ?Maaseh Avos Siman l?banim?, which literally means that actions and events in the lives of our Avos are a sign to their children. An example would be that many Gedolim would study the parsha of Yaakov meeting Eisav in order to learn how to deal with other nations. However it is much deeper than that. Rabbi Chaim Volozhiner ztz?l asks a question. In Avos 5:3 it says there were 10 generations from Noach until Avraham. Whereas, in the next mishna it says that Avraham Avinu had 10 tests. Why is Avraham only called ?Avinu? in regard to his tests? Rav Chaim explains that for each test that Avraham passed he was literally ?Avinu?, he put in to our Jewish genetic coding the ability to withstand the same adversity. He talks about people in his time of the late 1700?s, picking themselves up and going to Eretz Yisroel. This was a time of severe hardship. He explains that they were able to do it with the koach of this Parsha of Lech Lecha. So too, our children, have all of those kochos from Avraham?s tests inside of them. In a world where we can sometimes feel even common decency is under attack, we need to help our children draw on their heritage. They can be a true Ben Torah with mentchlichkite, regardless of the society around them, just as Avraham ?Avinu? did. Have a wonderful Shabbas, Rabbi Hillel Dudovitz Mesivta Menahel
