If enacted as proposed, the mandate also would take away much of the flexibility manufacturers need to craft policies that balance the needs of their workers with the company's finances, production requirements and competitive position. By interfering with the constructive, collaborative relationships you have forged with your employees, it would threaten to unravel mutually agreed-upon work rules and conditions. What's the bottom line? The mandatory paid sick leave proposal has been developed, according to its proponents, in response to the economic, health care and social problems faced by lower-wage workers. These problems demand thoughtful and focused attention from state leaders. however, the proposed ballot initiative is not the answer. If approved, it would weaken manufacturing competitiveness and - because Ohio would be the only state in the nation with a mandatory paid sick leave policy - severely handicap efforts to retain, create and attract jobs, at a time when Ohio can ill afford such a blow. Our immediate priority must be to urge state leaders and Ohio citizens- in a loud and unified voice-to do everything in their power to defeat this proposal. And we must be prepared to assist them any way we can to achieve that objective. Sincerely, President eburkland@ohiomfg.com
