> > > Dear Members,

This edition of Outlook alerts you to a major threat to manufacturers in the form of a statewide initiative that is likely to appear on the November 2008 ballot. Deceptively labeled The Healthy Families Act, the ballot initiative would require all Ohio employers with 25 or more employees to give their full-time workers in Ohio seven paid sick days per year (and a pro-rated number to part-time workers). Manufacturers who have studied the ballot initiative language have concluded that the paid sick leave mandate would have a highly disruptive and crippling impact on manufacturing operations - significantly complicating your efforts to schedule production, manage attendance and get product out the door. If approved by Ohio voters, the mandatory paid sick leave policy would impose substantial new costs on manufacturers across Ohio and have a chilling effect on current and future jobs. Above and beyond the mandated seven paid days of sick leave, the problem is compounded by the proposal's onerous implementation language. The mandatory paid sick leave policy would lead to many problems, including: ? Higher overtime costs ? Quality control issues ? Increased safety risks ? Nightmarish administrative burdens ? An invitation to abuse by employees (with no consequences) ? Costly, time-consuming litigation
