Yukon's top 10 mining and exploration projects

by Brian O'Hara Carl Schulze, president of the Yukon Chamber of Mines (also president of All-Terrane Mineral Exploration Services) explained that 2004 was a difficult year when many exploration projects were not followed up. However, in later years, these same projects moved ahead fairly quickly to advanced and prefeasibility stages. "There has been a resurgence in grassroots and greenfield exploration and exploration expenditures. Indeed, there is not enough local skilled labour to fill current demands, which is why we have drillers from Ecuador, geologists from Brazil and New Zealand and helicopter pilots also from New Zealand,? says Schulze. The territorial government's Yukon Mining Incentive Program (YMIP) provides incentives to individual prospectors or companies of up to $20,000 which could cover from 50% to 100% of basic exploration work. The YMIP budget is around $750,000 per year which keeps individual prospectors in business, especially important during lean years. Two of the top 10 projects I toured were discovered by prospectors taking advantage of the YMIP program - the Underworld Resources White Gold Project by Shawn Ryan and the Overland Resources Andrew Zinc Project by Ron Berdahl. Both projects were discovered by finding mineralization in surface outcrops.
