The 2010 King of the Hammers Takes on the World

By Chris Collard

The first day of racing kicked off with the 4Wheel Parts Last Chance Qualifier. Forty five teams battled it out on a six-mile track, hoping to land one of twenty starting positions in the main event. This year?s course was set up with a hundred miles of full-on desert racing before hitting the major rock trails. The key to winning was to get ahead of the pack and avoid the traffic jams in the Hammer trails. The scene on the Sledgehammer Trail was pure chaos, and thousands of spectators were on hand to watch the action. Running a new Overkill Engineering buggy, 4 Wheel Parts? Prez, Greg Adler drew a not-great 86th starting position and began the race from the back of the pack. We had caught up with co-driver Brent Goegebuer after they returned from a short pre-run the night before the race. Brent said, ?This car is fast, really fast.... and feeling good in the bumps. I think we?ll have a good race tomorrow.? The car was running strong off the start, passing the ORA film crew at race marker three, and disappearing into a cloud of dust. But the Hammers can be brutal on man and machine. The car suffered a game-ending breakdown near the BFGoodrich pits at mile marker thirty, and Greg and Brent had no choice but to put their sights on next year?s race. Eric Anderson, a.k.a. ?Mustard Dog,? graced the cover of Off-Road Adventures in last year?s KoH coverage and saw the checkered flag in ?08 and ?09. But he and co-driver Aaron Frappier had their work cut out for them this year. After self-recovering from a roll over, they ran out of fuel, and then suffered a game-ending broken rear link at mile fiftyseven. Anderson?s buggy is sponsored by King shocks, BFGoodrich, Raceline Wheels, LightForce, Marlin Crawler, Longfield, Diamond Axles, DJ Safety and the 12-Guy. Better luck next year. MAY 2010 ORA / 9
