In every sport there is one pinnacle event that exemplifies all things relevant. NASCAR has the Daytona 500, Formula 1 has Monaco, and for rock crawling and desert racing there are WEROCK and the Baja 1000. But what if you combined two of them together in the same race? Say, twenty or so insanely difficult, boulder-strewn rock trails, toss in a hundred-plus miles of whoop-de-doos, a few loose sand washes and a half-dozen ninety-mile per hour salt flats into the same race? By the way, those ?twenty or so insanely difficult, boulder-strewn rock trails? are the most intimidating obstacles in the U.S., namely; Aftershock, Big Johnson, Sledge Hammer and Wrecking Ball. To top it off, what if you made that race a one-day, or more exactly, a fourteen-hour, win-or-break battle to the finish with some of the best racers in the country... or the world? And that pinnacle is... the 2010 Griffin King of the Hammers! In its infancy stage just three years ago, it hasn?t taken King of the Hammers (KoH) long to be launched into the international limelight of extreme motor sports. The first event in 2007 yielded just over a dozen teams and a handful of spectators. But with magazine and TV coverage of the 2009 KoH (which drew about 10,000 spectators) to a dozen countries, word spread fast. In addition to an approximate 100% increase in spectators, the 2010 event drew competitors from around the world. Some of the countries represented were Australia, Mexico, Germany, Canada and Japan. One of the things that really stood out this year was the level of professionalism and focus by everyone present. Not only did the competitors kick it up a few notches, the attending vendors and the organizers stepped up to the plate in a big way. Prior to the event, city streets were laid out, a power grid was set up, and what appeared to be stadium lighting illuminated the entire area at night. Raceline Wheels quadrupled the size of their tent, allowing for several dozen other 10 / ORA MAY 2010 Ralf Kuller came all the way from Germany to take on the Hammers in a Jimmy?s 4x4 buggy. It was his first KoH and crossed the finish line in 36th position. vendors to display their goods. Outside, vendors such as BFGoodrich, 4 Wheel Parts, Goodyear, Traxxas, PCI, Currie, Body Armor, Pro Comp and Magnaflow all showed up with full blown displays set up with their semi trailers. Overall, almost one hundred of the best aftermarket manufacturers in the country were on site. To top it off, 4 Wheel Parts offered parts delivery the entire week. Yep, break your rig, order a part for delivery to the 4WP warehouse, and they would bring it out.
