New Children?s Physicians Building Elevates Oklahoma Academic Medicine

medical personnel dedicated to treating kids,? said Morris Gessouroun, MD, at OU Children?s Physicians. ?Now children and their families will have a state-ofthe-art medical office building designed to meet their needs and the needs of top children?s specialists as they pursue new ways to keep kids healthy.? Academic medical centers continuously evolve medical knowledge into specialized surgeries and life-saving care resulting in new cures and complex treatments. By design, this new 336,000 square-foot facility will house Dr. Morris Gessouroun stanDs in front of the new ou chilDren?s Physicians builDinG. nearly every type of children?s specialist in existence. This will improve the process of finding solutions to complex challenges children face by removing barriers to collaboration among physicians. ?This is a landmark transition that will carry us well into the 21st Century,? said Dr. Gessouroun, chief of pediatric critical care services. ?Without question, people now will view the facilities equal to what has always been the finest level of children?s care in the state.? The new facility certainly will impact OU Medicine?s ability to recruit top-rated physicians to Oklahoma. For three years, OU Children?s Physicians recruited for a fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologist (ear, nose, throat specialist). Since arriving in 2005 from Children?s Hospital Boston, Dr. Paul Digoy says OU Medicine has been recruiting another fellowshiplevel ENT specialist. ?We expect the arrival of Oklahoma?s second fellowship-trained ENT specialist this year,? Dr. Digoy said. ?The new physicians building and our state-of-the-art facilities definitely played a role in his accepting our offer.? The ?never-rest? approach by The Children?s Hospital at OU Medical Center to finding answers for patients and their families extends beyond science to achieving the highest levels of patient care. Through the only Child Life Department in Oklahoma City, physicians and child life specialists work along side each other to ensure children and families have support in navigating hospitalization and illness. ?Child life specialists work with physicians and parents to communicate medical procedures and illnesses to children in a language they understand,? Dr. Gessouroun said. ?This approach to patient care combined with our investment in technology, facilities and child-specific training provides OU Medicine professionals and support staff a whole new level of capabilities to help reassure children and their families.?
