The Innovations of the OU Cancer Institute
Cancer is complex and requires a comprehensive approach to caring for patients and their families. When the OU Cancer Institute opens a new seven-floor facility in October 2010, families will have greater access to the state?s most complete collection of cancer specialists, clinical trials and leading cancer treatments. They will be able to access every specialist from research to surgery to support services on the OU Medicine campus. Of the 3.5 million Oklahomans alive today, 1.5 million will develop cancer during their lifetime. Unfortunately, even with today?s technology, nearly 40 percent of people diagnosed with cancer will die of their disease. ?As an academic medical facility, we see this building as another resource for all cancer care providers in Oklahoma to find answers they need to keep people healthy,? Robert Mannel, MD, Director, OU Cancer Institute, says. ?Some of the world?s brightest minds and leading providers of cancer OU Medical Center I OU Physicians I The Children?s Hospital I OU College of Medicine ISSUE # 2 I SUMMER 2009 Another level of medicine I www.oumedicine.com/cancer
