of CONTENTS Mark Adamo: Little Women

2010

Based on Louisa May Alcott's enduringly popular novel about the adventures of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy in civil-war era New England, Mark Adamo's opera Little Women has been performed in more than 70 national and international engagements since its 1998 première by Houston Grand Opera and has achieved the status of an American classic. This recording, with a superb cast expertly directed for television, vividly brings to life an opera that The New Yorker hailed as "A beautifully crafted work, brilliantly molding Alcott's tale into operatic form," and The New York Times dubbed a "masterpiece." Marie-Nicole Lemieux: Ne me refuse pas Dedicated to the finest arias from French opera, this is the first recital recording of contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux with orchestra. In addition to beloved classics from the likes of Massenet and Saint-Saëns, the selections also include virtually unknown pieces, rescued from anonymity by Lemieux's warm and deep voice. Alexandra Pajak: Sounds of HIV Sounds of HIV is a musical translation of the genetic code of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Every segment of the virus is assigned musical pitches, thus taking the listener on an aural tour of the entire HIV genome. Though wholeheartedly experimental, Sounds of HIV's strikingly melodicism finds hope despite devastation. rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3; Vocalise Having conducted the premiere of Rachmaninov's Third Symphony in 1935, Leopold Stokowski revisited the work years later to create this remarkable recording. Performed by an orchestra hand-picked by the maestro, this performance bristles with excitement and tension. John corigliano: Circus Maximus - Blu-ray Audio "Circus Maximus was built to be a 35-minute surround sound piece. I had always wanted to write a piece in which the audience was in the center of the activity, unlike the traditional setup in which an audience watches and hears an orchestra play through a proscenium in one direction only. ... Naturally, the only way to capture this in a sound recording is by recording and playing the work in surround sound. Blu-ray finally offers the means to make this possible-and listeners at home can now experience a work in which they are truly surrounded by music." -John Corigliano Mehldau & von otter: Love Songs Commenting on her love of all genres, mezzo-soprano Anna Sofie von Otter explains, "I have never considered any type of music as being taboo." Her first recording for naïve exemplifies this wide-ranging repertoire, as she partners with jazz pianist Brad Mehldau for renditions of songs by Leonard Bernstein and Joni Mitchell on the same disc. Waldbühne 2010: An Evening with Renée Fleming Join Grammy Award-winning soprano Renée Fleming and the Berlin Philharmonic for a program of the most beautiful opera arias interspersed with atmospheric orchestral works. Sarah Kirkland Snider: Penelope Penelope is a song cycle suspended somewhere between indie rock and chamber folk. Inspired by Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, Penelope is a meditation on memory, identity, and what it means to come home. Penelope also features the talents of the Signal string ensemble and the distinct vocal talents of Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond).
