RIVER OF LIGHT American Short Works for Violin and Piano

Tim Fain, violin * Pei-Yao Wang, piano Includes World Première Recordings Tim Fain has constructed an adventurous and exciting recital of American violin music. It takes in the concert version of Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach - Fain "played the hell out of the piece", the composer says - as well as William Bolcom's nostalgic Graceful Ghost Rag. Variety and lyricism are the watchwords of the selection, exemplified by the soaring lyricism of Kevin Puts's Aria and by Lev Zhurbin's lovely Sicilienne. Together, all these pieces offer a vibrant portrait of contemporary repertoire. Tim Fain is a personal friend of many of the composers represented in this disc. The works are compact, lyrical, hugely appealing in their variety and will appeal as part of the living current of very approachable contemporary American violin music. Fain is closely associated with Philip Glass's music, and he has also appeared on screen in the film Black Swan, making him a visible presence and a great proponent for music in which he believes.

D Scarlatti * Tárrega * Ponce * José

Pablo Garibay, guitar First Prize, 2010 Tárrega International Guitar Competition, Benecasim Widely acclaimed for the subtle artistry of his playing, Pablo Garibay has won numerous international competitions including the JoAnn Falletta (USA), Julián Arcas (Spain), Manuel M. Scarlatti's 'soul-searching' Sonata in D minor, K.213 reveals even more of its expressive poignancy when arranged for guitar, and other sublime works in this recital are closely associated with the great Andrés Segovia, who described Tarréga's Capricho árabe as 'especially suited to reach the chords of a feminine heart'. 11 Winner of competitions such as the 'Manuel M. Ponce' (Mexico) and the 2006 Buffalo International guitar concerto competition 'JoAnn Falletta' (USA), Pablo Garibay has already established a global reputation for 'rare sensitivity, nuance and musicality.' This new recording establishes a new reference for this fine performer in his most attractive program to date.
