Music for Violin and Piano

Ida Bieler, violin Nina Tichman, piano One of

America

?s finest and most widely recognized composers, John Corigliano has won several Grammy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize and dozens of other honors . His hauntingly beautiful Chaconne and virtuosic The Red Violin Caprices, both based on his Academy Award winning film score for The Red Violin, attest to his maverick imagination, while a famous passage from Beethoven?s Seventh Symphony is the seed from which Fantasia on an Ostinato grew . The Violin Sonata, one of Corigliano?s earliest works, combines sophistication and vigor . See page 2 for more.

Rózsa

Viola Concerto

Gilad Karni, Viola The spirit of his native Hungary is seldom far away from the concert music of Miklós Rózsa, in spite of some 55 years spent in Hollywood and his long association with music for the cinema . His Viola Concerto, the later of the two works presented here, was written in 1979 ? at the request of Piatigorsky for the young Pinchas Zuckerman, who gave its first performance ? and brings with it a certain astringency reminiscent of Bartók rather than Kodály . See page 11 for more.

Sibelius: Night Ride and Sunrise While the beloved Valse triste and Scene with Cranes from Kuolema are signature tunes for the great Finnish composer, much of sibelius? orchestral and theatrical music remains undeservedly less familiar . sibelius drew four richly scored orientalist movements from the incidental music for the play Belshazzar?s Feast . The new medium demanded a new approach, both aesthetically and technologically, allowing film composition to develop into a sophisticated branch of music drama .
