Detroit Symphony Orchestra Thomas Wilkins Dear Mrs. Parks features a massive ensemble comprised of full orchestra plus choir and four vocal soloists. Influenced by blues, jazz, African music and Gospel music, it pays homage to Rosa Parks in the form of imaginary letters to the civil rights heroine. Hannibal Lokumbe?s career in music spans over four decades. He is the recipient of numerous awards including a Bessie award, the NEA, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has composed works for the Kronos Quartet, the Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit and Houston symphonies. The high-calibre cast, headed by Burkhard Fritz as the temperamental Renaissance artist and the 26-year-old Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska as Teresa, the woman with whom he tries to elope, is conducted by Valery Gergiev who ?pulled out all the stops. He whips the Vienna Philharmonic into a delirium similar to that which possibly took hold of the composer.? (Der Standard) This is French grand opera at its fast-paced and spectacularly-staged best. ligeti: String Quartets 1 & 2 Ligeti?s choral and orchestral music hit the mainstream when it was featured in the soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey, PG but his equally remarkable chamber works remain 5 less well known. Ligeti?s First Quartet is a work of striking originality. The Second Quartet, composed around fifteen years later, abounds in contrasts between glacial stillness and manic activity, mechanistic pizzicatos and gentle oscillations.
