How Do You Part Your Hair?

A makeover by Two Vidal Sassoon-Trained pros

Visiting

a hair stylist is an intimate experience requiring trust and communication. Stylists need to understand your wants and you must have confidence in their judgment and skills. Drama and surprise should not be part of the process. John Gregory and his wife Debra recently opened John Gregory Salon out east. The two professionally trained stylists worked for Vidal Sassoon in Manhattan and have extensive advanced training with Sassoon in London and the United States. "It is very important to us when working with both new and regular clients to understand their needs and expectations so we can assure a successful outcome,? John explained. "We thought we were pretty good until we went to our first Vidal Sassoon training,? John said. "The three week-long basic training showed us how much we didn't know and inspired us to get more training.? The couple worked for two years at Vidal Sassoon in Manhattan honing their skills. Later, they operated two salons in New Jersey before selling them and moving here. John started in the business at age 16 as an apprentice to his brother-in law, a master barber. Debra taught hair styling for many years to high school vocational students program. Today, John and Debra offer an apprenticeship too. Jessica Mohler was a full time stylist until she met the Gregorys. She decided she had much to learn and chose to work under their tutelage as preparation for career advancement "I love coming here,? Jessica said standing in the beautiful and immaculate salon which offers an open, soothing atmosphere along with state-of-the-art equipment. They even have a Takara Belmont "Rollerball? which emits infrared heat to accelerate coloring and conditioning as it rotates around your head gently. The décor of pale green walls accented by light woods, white drapes, glass and stainless steel provide a relaxed ambience which, incidentally, the couple designed to fit their style and work flow. That, of course, is enhanced by the warm and friendly principals who focus their full attention on every client. After my tour, I donned a gown and sat in the styling chair. John and Debra asked me many questions about what I wanted since their method is to spend a generous amount of time with each client. I explained that I have thin hair and wanted a style that appeared full and would be easy to maintain while giving me a fresh look. Debra suggested a soft body wave and cut which would give me needed volume. It sounded good to me. That done, I moved to the washing chair. Jessica gently shampooed my hair while massaging my scalp. Heaven! Next, Debra created my body wave. Then I sat under the "rollerball? which felt great! Back at the styling chair, John went to work, meticulously combing my hair at unusual angles to assure a perfect cut. I have never experienced such precision and care during a cut before. As I watched him work, it became obvious that John is a cut or two above average stylists. The results were excellent but that the sage continued! Next morning, as I worked with my new style, I realized I didn't know how to manage it. I panicked! I called although I felt awkward doing so and explained my dilemma to Debra. She immediately asked "Can you come in now?? When I arrived, John and Debra went right to work reviewing additional style changes that would make it easier for me to manage. There was an obvious lack of ego as they evaluated changes needed.

Looking Good

They took their time and, in what felt like no time, I had a style that was even better than the day before and is really fun to maintain. "We know how personal a hair style is and we dedicate ourselves to making the client happy,? John said. How refreshing when words translate into action. John Gregory Salon offers the "Prive? line of organic hair care products and, in addition to cuts and coloring, offers competitively priced waxing, highlighting, perms and straightening. Debra said that the Italian Artego hair color they use offers good coverage of grey hair and incredible shine. John Gregory Salon is located at 9139 58th Drive E. in the Braden Woods Office Park.
