Man Style
Socks, Socks, and More Socks....
Thank
you to Ray Collins with Fox 13 for sending me an email.... who can believe, that in the last six months, I covered every aspect of men's clothing except for socks! Such an important piece of the puzzle. Ray pointed out that you guys should be matching your pants with your socks, not your shoes. I agree....nothing looks more unmatched than khaki pants and black socks.....they should be tan, like your pants.....(and girls, if you're in doubt, your hosiery should match your hemline as well....don't wear black hose with anything other than black pants or skirt.) Of course we must review the different types of socks as well because you know you have many choices; there's the dress sock, the athletic sock, the short athletic sock, the tube sock, the trouser sock, and the classic argyle. Wow...lots of choices. There are also different types of knits used to make socks, from cotton terry to wool and probably every man-made blend in between. What you'll notice is that some knits last longer than others. Some droop around your ankle after the first washing (which just by the way, is not a good look) and others seems to go on way past when they should be retired from the sock drawer. Sometimes you'll need to choose socks that are "shoe appropriate.? What I mean by that is having the right thickness for your shoe. Dress shoes tend to require a thinner sock, whereas tennis shoes tend to require a thicker sock. You may want cushioned soles or heels as well. Whatever your choice for "inside footwear,? make sure that they are clean, well maintained and that you have no obvious holes. Make sure that they stay up to where ever they are supposed to stay and that they match your pants. I guess now would be a good time to tell you that white tube socks with sandals and shorts is not a good look, guys. Seldom are no socks appropriate, except for when you are wearing top-siders, flip-flops and sandals. To me, there is nothing less attractive than a really sharp pair of leather shoes and no socks though I know plenty of men who think nothing about this particular dress code. And most of those same men wear their top three buttons unbuttoned with lots of gold chains...you do the math! As a closing note, remember that if you're playing softball, football, soccer or any other outdoor sport and wearing white sport socks, you'll need to take extra care when washing so that you are successful in removing all the stains. I can tell you that bleach will wear down the fabric rather quickly, but if you aren't going to get them clean don't wear them so that others can see them. That about concludes my treatise on socks. They are fairly simple when you remember to match the hemline of whatever you're wearing. Beyond that, I wish you much style By Nan Hager, Marketing Executive.
