38 Inviting Arkansas

In the Spotlight Health Wise

Rachelle Sanders, Executive Director, Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Foundation "Sitting in an Italian restaurant in Nashua, NH with a bunch of girlfriends, I remember answering their questions. 'Arkansas?' Yes. 'Arkansas?' Yes. I was ready for my next adventure, and that is what I have found working for a world-class center for cancer research and care. This wonderful institute on the UAMS campus treats people from every county in Arkansas, every state, and from more than 30 nations. Whatever pity party I may be throwing myself on any given day ends in the parking deck when I turn off the ignition. As I walk, I begin to see patients and their worried family members, doctors conferring in the hallways, and nurses and technicians rushing to their cases. I remember how blessed I am and how important it is to do a great job. I find myself still learning and uncovering new passions and abilities. Most importantly, I find myself contributing to an organization that helps thousands of people through the most difficult times of their lives.? "The thrill of working with donors to realize their dreams for our community and state is rewarding to me. Like any good volunteer, a good fundraiser must BELIEVE in the mission they carry. I have been privileged to work at organizations that make Arkansas a great place to live. I'm proud of living a missiondriven life. Arkansans know of ACH's long history of providing great clinical care to the sickest of children. If you've ever experienced your child being sick, you probably know the relief of having ACH available as the leading Missy Lewis, Executive Vice President, Baptist Health Foundation "Making the right connections between people and current needs is the biggest challenge I face in my career. Donors need to feel relevance when they make their gifts. Likewise, if a patient has to be hospitalized, he or she will have the opportunity to learn what "All Our Best? truly means. We truly do care about patients at Baptist Health, from the moment they walk in beyond the moment they leave. Patients and their families deserve and expect "All Our Best.? Being a part of patient healing is the most rewarding aspect of my career, as Baptist Health Foundation provides programs and equipment that impact patient care in a positive manner day in and day out. As we do patient visits, it is so rewarding to see them light up because someone cares. Doing the right thing for patients, their families, donors, volunteers and Baptist Health matters most. Baptist Health lives up to their reputation as a Christian compassionate organization.? Inviting Arkansas presents and salutes just a few of Little Rock's many unsung heroes and heroines in non-profit and philanthropy. We laud them for choosing careers as public servants and for their never-ending foresight in solving present and future needs. advocates for children and families. ACH is focused on the wellness of children. I want folks to grapple with this question: 'How can we make Arkansas one of the healthiest places to live for children and their families?' I keep a Jane Hankins sculpture in my office of a little boy sitting on the moon. Anyone who knows me knows that Mary and I lost our son Elijah when he was 1. The sculpture was given to use during a time of deep grief and has become a daily reminder of what I came to ACH to accomplish. Fred Scarborough, CFRE Senior Vice President Arkansas Children's Hospital Foundation Sonya Murphy Schmidt, President, St. Vincent Foundation "No matter how hard our Foundation Team works or how many wonderful services St. Vincent Health System offers patients and families, there are still unmet needs in this community. That realization challenges me to be creative and maximize resources in order to serves as many families as possible. We are in the fundraising business, but it really is the 'mutually beneficial relationship building business.' One benefit that energizes me is connecting resources, whether it is funds, healthcare services, emotional or spiritual support, community partners or others to answer unmet needs. I often ask myself 'Did we help someone today?' I do not always need to know the person's name. I just need to know that St. Vincent is making a positive difference. My personal goal is to do our very best to be good stewards of the donors-regardless of their gift size-who help other families in extraordinary ways.? Alison Melson, Vice President of Communication, & Marketing at CARTI "CARTI is known for providing the best in cancer treatment, but we also have an incredible patient assistance programs called the Ray of Hope Network. Through Ray of Hope, we offer housing and transportation assistance, emotional counseling, as well as specialized exercise programs for those undergoing treatment. Within the past year, CARTI became the first provider in Arkansas to utilize Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), allowing our physicians to treat cancer with more precision. People in Arkansas should recognize how fortunate we are to have the level of technology and care that CARTI offers. I love meeting with our patients and their families. I've developed some incredible friendships with the CARTI Kids. No matter how stressful things can be, it's nothing compared to what those kids and families have gone through. I celebrate with them when they graduate high school or college and return to CARTI as volunteers. They truly inspire me.?
