All Wrapped Up, 2008 Holiday House
Photography by Nancy Nolan Makeup by Vanette Vititow, B. Barnett Texas girl Kimberly Bowman, originally from Dallas - "where shopping is 2nd only to high school football in competitive sports,? is the Chair of Holiday House 2008. It is no surprise that this former University of Arkansas cheerleader erupts with enthusiasm when speaking of the Junior League of Little Rock (JLLR) and the 3-day shopping extravaganza. To be held at the Statehouse Convention Center November 6-8, Holiday House will see over 14,000 shoppers and 150 merchants from 19 states. Hopes are high to raise record funds to be dispersed to many community projects the League supports. Kimberly leads the pack of 47 Holiday House committee members, which consists of 8 sub-committees, in this major undertaking. While Kimberly has been at the helm of this ship, she credits the work of all these folks in making the ship sail smoothly. Kimberly joined JLLR in 2004 when her oldest son, Will, was only 5 months old. "I was staying home with him and had only lived in Little Rock about a year,? she noted. "I needed to get out and meet some people!? She had just a few sorority sisters, a few fellow cheerleaders and a friend or two she had met through her husband, Arkansas Kimberly Bowman Holiday House 2008, Chair native Walker Bowman. "Now there are dozens of people I am privileged to call a friend, whom I never would have met had it not been for JLLR,? says Kimberly. Her work with Holiday House began when she was pregnant with her youngest son, Sam who is now 3. The former TV news reporter and anchor was approached to be the publicity chairman -a natural fit- for the event. "I have never been one to turn down a sign-up sheet, so my peers weren't too shocked when I agreed to Chair the entire event this year? Kimberly says with a chuckle. Among it's time-tested and delightfully entertaining parties, Holiday House brings a new event to the schedule this year. All Wrapped Up will be the final event at the close of business on Saturday. "The dynamic of The League is very different than what it was when [the first] Preview Party was created,? says Kimberly. A growing number of members felt the Wednesday night event was hard to juggle with family and work commitments. "We surveyed the Membership and polled about a dozen of our valued merchants about moving this special event to Saturday evening. We received overwhelming support,? Kimberly says. Kimberly is grateful for the scope of knowledge she now has. "From the logistics of loading 50 trailers in timed increments into one banquet hall, mapping and timing out trolley routes, hanging decorations on 120 foot ceilings, crunching numbers to feed 300 plus merchants and ensuring all JLLR volunteers have a 6 hour increment of time they have committed to, says Kimberly. "I am now armed with this information and much more, and thankful it will remain with me during the years ahead of community involvement. " She feels the most rewarding aspect is knowing the hard work makes a direct impact on the lives of women and children in the League's community projects. "We may never meet the children who went to school the first day armed with the tools they need to succeed with their [JLLR project] Stuff the Bus backpack,? says Kimberly "but it's humbling to know that he or she is out there.? In lieu of the former Preview Party, All Wrapped Up will be a Saturday evening of food, drink, live and silent auctions boasting over 200 items and great music by Lagniappe. A Rolex Raffle sponsored by Sissy's Log Cabin will highlight the party. What timing for the holidays? Check out www.jllr.org for a complete listing of all Holiday House happenings.
