In the Spotlight
Like most artists there is something deep behind the eyes of Ethan Marbaise. When he picks up his paintbrush and connects with his canvas, magic engulfs his spirit, and the works of a masterpiece take shape. As he steps back to look at his creation, he methodically touches up his work, adding dimension to his piece with his finished work in mind. Ethan's most common work is that of windows, an object that fits into the history of his very young past. When Ethan, the son of Sandra and Jon Marbaise, was 18 months old, he fell from a second story window. After an initial trip to a local hospital in Batesville, Ethan was then airlifted by Angel One to Arkansas Children's Hospital. His diagnosis: a depressed skull fracture. Partial paralysis set in, and fear overtook his parents. "We all have ups and downs in life,? Sandra recalled, "But this was the night that I learned what it meant to suffer.? The Marbaises' braced themselves for the long night ahead as Ethan was wheeled into surgery at 2am. "I will never forget when Dr. Ali Crist and Dr. Victor Williams entered our family waiting room,? Sandra said. "They said Ethan would be fine.? Ethan remained in the hospital for a week and continued treatment after he was discharged. When something this horrific happens, you try to make sense of it and find some good in the situation. In this case it is the blessing of having Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) in Little Rock. Yet they have come to realize the never ending good Arkansas Children's Hospital does for children around our state and nation. "It is about their deep, never-end-

Arkansas Children's Hospital Holiday Cards
Photography by Nancy Nolan ing love for children? remarked Sandra. Sandra, Jon and Ethan, who is now 6 years-old, feel honored that Ethan has had an opportunity to contribute by participating in the ACH Holiday Card Project. "There is no way to adequately thank someone for saving your child's life. This is only a small token of our gratitude,? says Sandra. The ACH Holiday Card project, created by the Arkansas Children's Hospital Auxiliary in 1967, has become a successful fundraiser for the hospital. Money raised from the project benefits several missions at ACH, one being an endowed chair for Urology. The funds will also benefit the child maltreatment program. Throughout the year, former and current patients create artwork to be submitted to the Holiday Card committee. Submissions are made from individuals with varied economic and geographic backgrounds. The common thread is that all of the artists have been touched by Arkansas Children's Hospital. Ethan is joined by other artists in the project, including special guest artist Matt McLeod. Each artist has brought their individual voice in creating a holiday card that becomes a gift to not only the recipient but to the children at Arkansas Children's Hospital. Ordering these Holiday Cards is easy. You don't even have to leave the house. A Holiday Card Office has been set up and those wanting to purchase can call 501.364.1259 or 1.800.595.6496.
