On the day of our visit, Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson were playing their real life roles of a happy couple. They were excited to be in their home away from home, visiting family and enjoying a break from Ted's role as the self-made billionaire Arthur Frobisher on the FX legal drama, Damages, and Mary's role as Nancy, the mother of Will Ferrell in the summer movie, Step Brothers. Our conversation didn't encompass the Hollywood scene so much as the depth of these two individuals desires to focus on the roles they play in making our world a better place. Now playing a part to help the Alzheimer's Association, Mary and Ted will be honorary chairs of Autumn Lights to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Arkansans and area non-profits are fortunate to be the benefactor of their generosity. "We said 'yes' to Autumn Lights because Alzheimer's is a devastating disease that affects way too many people in the world,? Mary told us. "There is nothing more painful than watching a beautiful, vibrant person slowly disappear before your very eyes.? In Arkansas, an estimated 100,000 citizens experience the effects of Azheimer's, and the Alzheimer's Association strives to provide and enhance care and support for all affected by this disease. Alzheimer's is a progressive type of dementia that affects a person's memory, but also causes individuals to experience confusion, impaired judgment, disorientation and despair. Most Alzheimer's patients become dependent on assistance, and more times than not, it is family members caring for these special people. The Alzheimer's Association works tirelessly to help by providing tools for families coping by offering family consultations, a 24/7 Helpline, support groups and, most importantly, hope, as research and public policy continues. On Thursday, November 6, 2008, The Autumn Lights Gala and Silent Auction will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel Grand Ballroom. The title holds a special meaning for the Alzheimer's Association. "Autumn? is often used to refer to a period of maturity, as in "the autumn of life.? The Alzheimer's Association wants to be the "light? in the autumn of senior's lives. Mary and Ted are pioneers when it comes to the charities and organizations they support. In the last two decades, Ted's stellar acting career has been complemented by his staunch ocean advocacy, appearing in public service announcements, appealing to donors and testifying to the government on the condition of our oceans. He currently sits on Oceana's Board of Directors, where he continues to fight on our oceans' behalf. The couple just returned from an amazing trip to Africa with the Clinton Foundation. "We viewed the work that the Clinton Foundation is doing to change the course of AIDS in the world,? Mary remarked. "Two out of every three children that are being treated for HIV in Africa are receiving their drugs as a result of the work that President Clinton and his foundation are doing there,? she concluded. Mary and Ted are also supporters of the THEA Foundation, founded by their friends Linda and Paul Leopoulos, in honor of their daughter, Thea. "Ted and I have both taught acting workshops for them, and we love the nurturing spirit of their organization,? says Mary. "THEA remembers that the arts are an
