In the Spotlight Carol Herzog, Potluck
Why Not?
There are more than 300,000 Arkansas families that lack the resources to sufficiently feed their families. Potluck Food Rescue of Arkansas is a local organization trying to help reduce this number and bridge the gap between excess food and the hungry. Carol Herzog, Executive Director, has been involved with Potluck Food Rescue for Arkansas for 13 years. Her tone, when speaking of the organization, is always inclusionary; Carol never takes solitary credit for the organization's successes. "We do a heck of a good job and I am very proud of that,? Carol commented. Carol truly believes Potluck's program is the only food rescue that provides children with more food than any other school program in the state. "Not only does this pantry provide nutritious food for children, it is also a positive outlet for them by providing a safe, adult supervised environment to enjoy social and recreational activities and a nutritious meal,? she added. Although a myriad of volunteers', board members' and supporters' conglomerated efforts ensure Potluck's success, many agree that Carol is the driving force behind Potluck's streamlined execution and continued exemplary achievements. "I am with Potluck Food Rescue because of Carol Herzog,? remarked photographer Nancy Nolan. Nancy, who has been involved in numerous local non-profits, has been involved with Potluck's mission for over five years. "When Carol starts to speak about Potluck, she is so passionate and elegant about the organization,? Nancy commented. "It's mesmerizing... she's so involved and dedicated to servicing this community and the people in need whom we all walk among and often don't recognize,? Nancy continued. Nancy noted that, much like Carol's leadership style, the entire organization is organized and efficient, with little extraneous expenses or malady. Potluck rescues tons of food per day from hundreds of local foodservice businesses with business partners including restaurants, caterers, hospitals, hotels, grocery stores, farmer's markets, and more. As a non-profit organization that provides all services free of charge, and as the only potluck rescue in the state, Potluck has delivered almost 4 million pounds of food without charge to hundreds of community food programs throughout the state. Potluck's Kid's Pantry program has been fighting childhood hunger since 1997. The Pulaski County Youth Services joined with Potluck and delivered 1.6 million pounds of a wide variety of food to more than 4,000 children last year. Local soup Photography by Nancy Nolan kitchens in the Little Rock area provide daily lunch and dinner meals for those in need, and most of these organizations rely on food rescue programs like Potluck to provide them with food. Potluck has partnered with Christian Mission Church in North Little Rock to serve food to at-risk individuals and families. The church is open five days a week to help feed those in need. Volunteers at the church also make house calls with lunch and dinner meals for those that are unable to travel to church. "Thanks to our partnership with Potluck - that meal is now much more than a bowl of rice and beans with a slice of bread,? said the church's Pastor Raymond Govan. The need for food rescue is being met by Potluck. The organization welcomes anyone that would like to volunteer or become a food donor. The organization has fed more at risk individuals and families than any other organization in the state. Potluck serves more than 70,000 people in central, south, and southeast Arkansas annually. To help the cause Potluck will host its 3rd Annual Corks and Forks: Perfect Pairing of Wine and Food-benefiting the Potluck Food Rescue for Arkansas, Thursday, September 25, 2008.
