YOuTH SERVICES

The Gulf Coast Workforce Board partners with Gulf County Schools, Friends of Franklin County Libraries, and Bay District Schools to offer youth programs in all three counties in the region. The programs are designed to address the needs of disadvantaged youth ages 14 to 21 and provide career exploration, mentoring, internships, and summer work activities. This year 386 in school youth were served through our partners. These students participated in job shadowing, field trips, campus tours, industry visits, teen pregnancy prevention activities, and much more. In addition, youth received 96 Ready to Work Credentials. Striving Toward Achieving Real Success or STARS is a youth program in Bay County. During the 2006-2007 year, students in the program participated in career classes and attended short classes in various vocational fields including LPN, Child Care, Cosmetology, Carpentry, Digital Design, Auto Body, Auto Tech and Welding. In addition, more than 250 students and their parents participated in "Dine and Learn? events where topics such as teen pregnancy prevention, goal setting, careers, and education were covered. The Opportunity Center is the youth program for students in Gulf County. During the 2006- 2007 year, students in the program explored careers choices, learned employability skills, and participated in field trips and job shadowing activities. Students also practiced for various tests, such as the SAT, ACT, and the PSAT.

Teens in Gear Enjoy Realize Succeed (TIGERS) program is an after school youth program for students in Franklin County. The program provides youth with educational, cultural, and enriching activities to inspire individual growth. During the year, students got one-on-one goal setting and guidance and participated in exciting field trips to Space Camp and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). Furthermore, 169 students and parents took part in Dine and Learn events where such things as careers, education, and teen pregnancy prevention were discussed.
